So as it is, college is doing some serious life-sucking, so I am altering my ambitions a bit for JoNoWriMo. My shoes story, I think, shall just have to sit on a shelf for a while until I have the time to write it. In the mean time, my JoNo goals are now to plan out the epic fantasy I've had in my head for the past few years so I can write it for NaNoWriMo, and to lengthen Licentious Child (a novella that I wrote for my graduation project earlier this year, which you can buy, if you want...).

~Mary

No, that's a lie. I was more than a stranger, but of another species entirely. You know how in sci-fi stuff, the aliens wonder how humans tell each other apart, like to them we all look alike. That's how I felt, entirely alien on a strange planet filled with Aeropostle, Abercrobie, bleached blondes, and Rainbows. They all looked so alike, and... I was lost.

The school tried to get me involved, and the doppelgangers seemed friendly enough. It's just that as soon as someone introduced themself to me, I almost immediately forgot who they were, so I found myself talking to the guys instead. They, I could mostly tell apart. They didn't bleach their hair, and read the same magazines about same clothes, and put on the same make-up, and didn't talk in the same slightly irritating voice.

I also discovered the true value of shoes.

Lifeline

Ok, see if you can follow me here:

So everyone looks alike, right? The easiest way I discovered to find kindred spirits amongst the doppelgangers, was to simply look down. People, clothing, they all run together, but shoes stand out. So if I looked down across the sea of Rainbows (which are flip-flops, FYI, and the footwear of choice amongst the preps across America), I just might find a lifeline.

Female

Kyla was the first girl that I could distinguish from the masses. She was wearing a pair of Rocket Dogs, which so happen to be my second favorite shoe brand next to Chuck Taylors. She had been sick and had been absent the first few days that I was at Emory High. After her feet came into my view, I looked up and saw someone who was neither blonde or over made-up, and wore a t-shirt imprinted with an anime character I adored. I knew right away that I had found a friend.

~Mary

So I'm in Acorn, my school's coffee shop, and I hear someone mention Twilight (by the fabulous Stephenie Meyer) which causes my Twidar to go off (Twilight + radar = Twidar). At first I wasn't entirely sure if she was referring to *my* Twilight, but then she mentions Edward, which causes me to to shout, "Yay, Twilight!" It's not that I'm a crazed fangirl (which I am), it's just that I was delighted to find another Twi-hard.

Anyway, my exclamation gets the attention of the other girls in the coffee shop, who apparently are Twi-hards as well. The result is a coffee shop-wide fanfest, excepting the boyfriend of one of the aforementioned Twi-hards, who looked very confused throughout the whole event.

Totally random, yet made me giggle for the rest of the day.

         + =

There is an uncanny resemblance between me and the girl in the middle with glasses...

Moving on, I think I have an idea for my JoNoWriMo, which sparked itself into a novel from a conversation I had with my roommate. We were talking about essays, and she told be about one she did that was on people's personalities based on their shoes. The funny thing is that I judge people all the time based on their footwear. So... that's what my JoNo's about. Tentatively, I'm calling it My Life According to Shoes and is intended to be a work of fiction, yet so far seems to be somewhat autobiographical... Oh well, we'll see how it turns out.

And just for the heck of it, here's the list of words that had to be added to my computer's dictionary for today (you know, to eliminate the dastardly red squiggle of DOOM):

Stephenie

Twidar

fangirl

Twi-hard(s)

fanfest

JoNoWriMo

JoNo

Ah, my penchant for made-up words infuriates my computer so...

~Mary
